Maratha Sardars were noblemen who were involved in administration.Descendants of Maratha sardars from the period of Mahadaji Shinde reside in the Lashkar area of Gwalior today. Barge, Mohite, Avad, Jadhav, Kadam,Nimbalkar are some other sardar families. Maratha noblemen from Gwalior who accompanied the Great Mahadji Scindia, in establishing his empire in Gwalior, parts of Rajasthan, and other regions were called Jagirdars. Most of these Maratha families were from Koregaon, Satara district. Among these Shitole, Sarkar, Phalke, Mahadik, and Jadhav were the class one Jagirdars.
